“The Healing Project” Samora Pinderhughes and Friends at Carnegie Hall
Jehbreal joins pianist-composer Samora Pinderhughes as he leads world-class musicians, composers, poets, and others in a new multidisciplinary work that explores the daily realities of violence, incarceration, policing, and detention in US communities. Combining musical compositions with audio interviews and raw testimonials from 15 states across the country, The Healing Project is a condemnation of racial capitalism and the prison industrial complex and an artistic celebration of resilience, healing, and resistance. Making its NY premiere, the concert version of The Healing Project is co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall, and produced by Anna Deavere Smith, Vijay Iyer, and Glenn Ligon. For more information visit Carnegie Hall.org.
Samora Pinderhughes: GRIEF
Jehbreal joins acclaimed pianist-vocalist-composer and multidisciplinary artist Samora Pinderhughes at The Kitchen in NYC. On the heels of his world premiere of The Healing Project, a multi-pronged work that springs from interviews the artist conducted with people of color in 15 states surrounding experiences of incarceration and structural violence across the United States, Pinderhughes further expands his work of creating communal space for grieving and healing. One element of The Healing Project is his latest album, GRIEF. At Westbeth, Pinderhughes and collaborators will perform newly reimagined selections from the album within the installation, creating bold new performances that meld songcraft, ritual, and conversation alongside a rotating presentation of moving image works to be screened at intervals between live performances. The films serve as companion pieces to the GRIEF album, and present Pinderhughes’s work with his collective RSCK (alongside Christian Padron, Kassim Norris, and Ray Neutron), as well as the result of long-standing collaborations with filmmakers Christian Padron, Josh Begley, Vashni Korin, and Daniel Pfeffer.

The Healing Project Exhibition
Jehbreal is featured as a collaborator in Samora Pinderhughes’ exhibition The Healing Project on view from March 24-September 4, 2022. The Healing Project takes multiple forms: as musical songs, films, an exhibition, community gatherings, live performances, and a digital library of audio interviews. The works are rooted in interviews and relationships that Pinderhughes has fostered since 2011 and have been formed by over 100 storytelling and artistic collaborators. At the center of the project are the intergenerational voices of individuals across the country, including folks incarcerated in prisons and detention centers. Their stories, experiences, and ideas serve as the foundation for The Healing Project’s vision for societal transformation.
The artworks presented as part of The Healing Project spotlight the violence of our present day structures and offer profound possibilities for our collective recovery. This recovery is full-bodied: emotional, mental, and physical. By interrogating the intersections of profit and violence, the artists and contributors of The Healing Project charge us toward a necessary revolution built on self and collective care. For more information on the exhibition, to visit in person or explore it digitally please visit YBCA.org
